January - March 1999
Greetings from the Editor
We have a "Carver of the Month" competition each month from October through March at our monthly meeting. Members present for the meeting and carving session that day vote on their favorite carving. The friendly competition is intended as a stimulation for the less advanced carvers in the club, people who do not usually receive ribbons at our yearly show. It's a good way to encourage the newer carvers to strive to do a bit better. Winners receive a small monetary award--something to help in purchasing a new tool or something like that.
Winners in the March competition were: 1st - Ray Isom; 2nd (tie) - Bonnie Eisemann and Mel Pepper; 3rd (tie) - Jim Chaney and Will Eisemann.

Rally on the Rio 2000 at the Mercedes Livestock Showgrounds will be held from 26 January through 1 February 2000. We've many classes planned for both carvers and non-carvers, including male non carvers.
There are hookups for travel vehicles for $100.00 per week. For those traveling by auto, there are several motels in the vicinity. Details for this event will be posted here as soon as they are finalized, including contacts for spaces on the grounds for travel vehicles, class registration for carvers and non carver activities, etc.

Many club members have been busy this Spring at several area events who wanted woodcarving as a part of their programs.
At the 2 Banger John Deere Country Fair at Koelle's farm required two days worth of participation. Elaine Craft, a carver and an expert yarn (wool) spinner did both things. Other carvers participating were: Dave and Edith Maiden, Raleigh Draper, Gordon Hubbard, Clyde Carter, Margaret and Jack Cawood, andToby Craft.
Another two days of carving demonstrations took place at BorderFest in Hidalgo. Helping there were: Raleigh Draper, Elaine and Toby Craft, Delford Brandt, Harold Baggerly, Dave and Edith Maiden, Fernando Gutierrez, and Gordon Hubbard.
The last event for this Spring, I think, was on 13 March where the following showed up to help the City of Alamo celebrate its 75th Anniversary: Corky Luman, James Yates, Don Carlton, Margaret Cawood, Doug Johnston, Maxine Blanchard, Bonnie Eisemann, Will Eisemann, Marion Miller, El Scholes, Barbara Rohn, and Ralph Hedrick.
